Who Will Benefit?

The course is appropriate for testers, test team leaders, developers, development managers, business analysts, and anyone wishing to gain ISTQB Certified Tester Foundation Level certification.

Prerequisites

None. However, we recommend that delegates wishing to take the Foundation exam have at least six months experience in software testing.

Course Content

Fundamentals of Testing

• Basic principles related to testing, the reasons why testing is required, what test objectives are, and the principles of successful testing.
• Test process, activities, and work products.
• Testing skills, the benefit of the whole team approach and independence in testing.

Testing Throughout the Software Lifecycle

• How testing is incorporated in every step of a software development lifecycle, including the test-first approach, shift-left, testing in DevOps, and the role of retrospectives.
• The test levels, test types, and impact analysis when working with maintenance testing.

Static Testing

• Static techniques such as static analysis and reviews (i.e., informal reviews, walkthroughs, technical reviews, and inspections).
• The roles and responsibilities in different reviews and factors for successful reviews.

Test Analysis and Design

• Apply test techniques to derive test cases from other software work products.
• Black-box techniques: equivalence partitioning, boundary value analysis, decision table testing and state transition testing.
• White-box techniques: statement and branch testing and coverage.
• Experience-based techniques: error guessing, exploratory testing and checklist-based testing.
• Collaboration-based approaches: user stories, acceptance criteria and acceptance test-driven development (ATDD).

Managing the Test Activities

• Management of test activities is covered from a perspective where the tester can work with managers, focusing on risk-based testing, test execution and defect reporting and handling.
• Test documentation work products, such as test plans and reports.
• Test monitoring, test control and test completion.
• Configuration management and how to report defects in a clear and understandable way.

Test Tools

• How to classify tools, and the risks and benefits connected with test automation.

The Exam

The Foundation Certificate is awarded to those who pass a written one-hour multiple-choice exam which is set by the ISTQB. Candidates must score 65% or more to pass the exam.
